- Barclays Spaces for Sport & Yorkshire Radio
Barclays Spaces for Sport is about encouraging participation in sport. The competition, run by them in conjunction with Yorkshire Radio, was looking for the most deserving clubs who could outline plans to spend £1,000. The entry asked for 300 words to explain why your club needed the money and why it would make a real difference.Congratulations to Craig Stratford for sending in this winning entry.
"The summer of 2005 was a momentous time for cricket, both in our country and for our club.
The same season that England were winning the Ashes series against Australia, Emley Clarence Cricket Club were unable to enter any teams into the Huddersfield Junior Cricket league due to a lack of interest from children in the village.
But by the end of the 2005 season, we began to see children playing in the nets and on the outfield of our ground as their interest was rekindled thanks to the heroics of Flintoff, Harmison, Vaughan and co.
Move forward two years to the 2007 season and the club now fields teams in the Under 9s, 11s, 13s and 15s leagues and has around 50 local youngsters playing, with ages ranging between 6 and 15 and comprising both boys and girls.
The club has always prided itself on promoting junior cricket and even today, nine of the regular eleven in the men’s first team came through the junior ranks or attended the village primary school.
The club has also produced three players who have played professional cricket in Alan Walker (Durham & Northamptonshire), Matthew Wood (Yorkshire & Glamorgan) and Ryan Robinson (Yorkshire & Durham).
We believe that the turnaround from having no junior teams to having 50 interested juniors in just two years justifies our entry.
In order to maintain our history of producing talented juniors, the prize would fund:
- the purchase of training equipment specific to the juniors
- the fees to enable two managers to complete their coaching qualifications
- the purchase of team shirts and caps for the juniors
The prize would enable the club to improve the quality of coaching and training and would drastically improve the skills of every junior that participates for our junior teams."
- Chris Knowles is a 3rd Year Sports Journalism student from the University of Huddersfield who has been asked to produce written articles for Emley Clarence's website.
He is looking to build up a portfolio of work for a practical module he has to complete and he will be working with the club through to the end of March. - more details - easyfundraising.org.uk provides a FREE service where you can shop with your favourite online stores and at no extra cost raise funds for Emley Clarence Cricket Club.
